A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The cross brings you the clever non-shedding attributes of the Poodle and the gentle and loyal family attributes of the Bernese. The objective is to merge the two together to make non-other than a unicorn... a loyal and loving teddy-bear that is quick to learn and low to non-shedding.
While most puppies will be low shedding, that isn't what everyone wants nor will it be what everyone gets... some puppies may develop a true Bernese coat which is polished and beautiful, but would indeed shed.
Sizing
There are the 4 main categories of Bernedoodle sizes you will find:
Coat types:
Straight - Typical Bernese coat that will shed
Wavy Coat - sheds minimally, if at all*
Curly - non-shedding/ low shedding*
*Allergy Friendly:
The Bernedoodle breed is typically a suitable breed for those with allergies to dog dander. The curlier the coat the better in terms of those that experience allergies such as sneezing and runny itchy eyes. The majority have a wavy coat giving you the teddy bear flooff and are typically suitable for those with allergies.
The straighter the coat, the more it sheds. Straighter coats are more rare and definitely less suitable for those with allergies. Typically straighter coats are found in F1b Bernedoodles where an F1 bernedoodle has been crossed back to a Bernese Mountain dog leaving them 75% Bernese / 25% Poodle. (like our Ellie who very much resembles a Bernese Mountain dog without the brown and therefore sheds)
Typically, you can often tell by the time a puppy is a few weeks old the type of coat it will have, and can help match you to the best coat type for your situation.
And for those of you allergic to dog saliva... unfortunately you will likely be allergic to all bernedoodles no matter the coat type they have.
Grooming
So while the benefit of the curlier coat comes to those with allergies it is also more challenging to maintain. Those with a straight coat typically get by with regular brushing, where wavy and curly coats will require clipping every other month.
